Mercedes-Benz joins BMW and Audi to set up a new plant in Brazil for car production, in order to profit from the luxury car market and avoid high import tariffs. Mercedes will be the first to start production of the C-Class at the beginning of next year, and will begin production of GLA-type crossover vehicles in the next few months.
The plant is designed in a city 170 kilometers northwest of Sao Paulo, the financial center of Brazil. The establishment of the factory will bring more than 600 jobs, and correspondingly generate more than 3,000 jobs from the local regional suppliers' own service industry.
In 1999, Mercedes-Benz set up a factory in Brazil to produce A-class cars, which is also the first luxury car manufacturer in Brazil. However, it stopped production in 2010 and repositioned the plant as a factory for the production of commercial vehicles.
Brazil is currently the fourth largest automaker in the world after China, the United States and Japan. Due to the high tariffs, although Brazil's luxury car production is increasingly mature, it still accounts for only 1% of all car sales.
